Lincoln had a deep sense of duty to his country that destined him for politics. He served four terms in the Illinois State Legislature and was elected to Congress in 1846. In 1860, he was elected sixteenth president of the United States. This tall, gentle man believed passionately in liberty for all men and fought to unite the nation under this guiding principle.
