As the furious fighting continued through the afternoon of the 2nd day of
Gettysburg, young Colonel Patrick O’Rourke and the 140th NY arrived on
Little Round Top at the nick of time and immediately charged into the thick
of battle. O’Rourke shouted; “Down this way boys!”, and was tragically cut
down by a hail of fire in the front of his men. His brave sacrifice plugged a
vital hole in the line as more Union regiments reinforced the position.
