Fireman from the Bowery and other parts of New York City formed the 73rd New York Infantry Regiment in 1861. They adopted the flashy Zouave style of uniform and became known as the Second Fire Zouaves. The sculpture was created by G. Moretti and dedicated September 4, 1897.
