At the time of the battle of Gettysburg, John Burns was a 70 year old veteran of the War of 1812. Upon the arrival of Confederate troops, John Burns took up his old flintlock musket and joined the Union forces at McPherson’s Woods. He was wounded three times and allowed by Confederate soldiers to return home on Chambersburg Street. He died in 1872. Sculptor: Albert G. Bureau. Dedicated July 1st 1903.
